Overview

Zapala is an important city in the province of Neuquén, Argentina, and its name of Mapuche origin: It is the most accepted theory, deriving from the word Chapadla or Chapala, where chapa means "mud" or "swamp" and la means "dead", translating as "dead swamp" or "muddy lagoon". It is currently known as the "Gateway to the Pehuén Route", the city functions as a strategic geographical point and road link between the Patagonian steppe and the Andes mountain range. The arrival of the General Roca Railway between 1913 and 1914 definitively boosted the city's growth, turning it into the most important commercial, administrative, and service hub in the center of Neuquén province.
