"Municipality of Paso de los Libres, with the people."
Paso de los Libres is located in the southeast of the province of Corrientes, on the western bank of the Uruguay River, on the border with the Federative Republic of Brazil. It functions as the head of the homonymous department and connects directly with the Brazilian city of Uruguaiana via the Agustín P. Justo - Getúlio Vargas International Bridge. Its strategic location on National Route 14 consolidates it as the main land border crossing for Argentine foreign trade and a neuralgic node of the Mercosur bioceanic corridor.
The origin of the city dates back to September 12, 1843, when General Joaquín Madariaga disembarked on the banks of the Uruguay River leading a contingent of 108 Corrientes combatants exiled in Brazil to join the fight against the federal government of Juan Manuel de Rosas. In homage to that crossing and the men who participated in the feat, the settlement was named Paso de los Libres. Over the decades, the town gained national geopolitical relevance; it was the birthplace of Argentine president Arturo Frondizi and marked a milestone in South American integration with the inauguration, in May 1947, of its international road-rail bridge, a work that forever redefined its urban, productive, and commercial dynamics.
Currently, the socioeconomic physiognomy of Paso de los Libres is defined by its role as a first-rate logistics and customs hub, housing the Cargo Terminal Complex (COTECAR), which concentrates the largest volume of international land cargo transport in the country. This infrastructure of services for foreign trade and heavy transport is complemented and enhanced by the development of the local Industrial and Logistics Park, a strategic site conceived for the establishment of manufacturing, storage, and value-added companies that take advantage of the immediate proximity to the border and the province's industrial promotion regimes. This industrial and logistics vocation coexists with a solid regional primary activity, where irrigated rice production, cattle ranching, and the forestry sector stand out. On the sociocultural level, the city is recognized as the Cradle of the Corrientes Carnival, a manifestation that genuinely reflects the border symbiosis through its marked Carioca imprint, its comparsas, and the strong presence of samba enredo in community life.
